Research Summary

My research focuses on ocular tumors, specifically melanoma and retinoblastoma. My work with retinoblastoma utilizes transgenic mouse models of the tumor to investigate the molecular biology of the disease and whether vitamin D analogs produce tumor regression in these animal models. I also study melanoma in a transgenic mouse model. From 1985-2003, I worked with the National Eye Institute’s Collaborative Ocular Melanoma Study (COMS) and was the head of the COMS Pathology Center; I remain curator of the specimens collected during the study. My other interests include medical ethics and the history of medicine and ophthalmology.
