Applications
The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences participates in the Ophthalmology Matching Program. All applicants should also participate in this matching program. All applications are received via the Central Application Service, P.O. Box 7999, San Francisco, CA 94120. Yasmin S. Bradfield, M.D. is the residency program director.
Selection
Major factors we consider in selecting residents are the applicant's record in medical school, communication skills and our assessment of his/her maturity and suitability for our program.
Among individuals who are rated highly in regard to these characteristics, some further preference is given to those who seem likely to enter academic ophthalmology as full-time clinician-investigators. We usually rank 40 applicants out of a pool of approximately 250 applicants. Our three positions generally are filled from among the first 10 to 20 individuals on our list.
